ബാഹുകൻ

In the puranas, Bahuka was Nala in disguise. Nala lost his kingdom to his cousin in a game of dice. He abandoned his beloved wife, Damayanti, in the forest, alone and scantily clad in her half-garment. Disgraced, Nala had to hide his face, handsome as it was, behind the ugliness of Bahuka, dwarfed by his own self-deprecation. Thus Bahuka, at that point of time, was a complete loser. Or almost. Until he made his last winning move by making a diplomatic pact with King Rithuparna. Bahuka, who understood the horse’s heart inside out and could ride a horse at the speed of light, trades his skill with Rithuparna who was the master of counting and knew how to roll the dice for a sure win. Sure enough, Bahuka was finally able to shed his ugly face, stand tall, and win back his kingdom and wife.

That’s but a gist of the story, however, the poet’s intent was not to narrate the story of Nala. The poem is a political satire. The poet calls politics, or democracy rather, a game of numbers. Here, victory is always with the numbers. Switching parties and winning votes are all made easy if one has the numbers. And the deal-makers unduly cash in.

Das M.D.’s full-throated recital underscores the satire in the poem. Through Nala’s story, the poet derides the politics of the times this poem was written in. Unfortunately, politics continues in a hopeless state. Pun intended.

ബാഹുകൻ 

ചതുരംഗക്കളിയാണീ 

രാജ്യഭാരം, സഹോദര-

നെതിർത്തപ്പോൾച്ചുവടല്പം  

പിഴച്ചുപോയി.

ചക്രവർത്തിമകുടവും

പട്ടമഹിഷി പോലും ഹാ!

നഷ്ടമായി ബാഹുകനായ് 

പുറത്തലഞ്ഞേൻ.

അശ്വഹൃദയത്താൽ നഷ്ട-

പദവികൾ വീണ്ടെടുക്കാം;

അഗ്നിമന്ത്രപ്രയോഗത്താ-

ലരിയെ വെല്ലാം.

എങ്കിലുമിസ്സംഖ്യകൾ തൻ 

കളിയല്ലോ ജനകീയം;

സംഖ്യകളാൽ ജയിക്കേണ്ടു 

ജനകീയത്തിൽ.

കക്ഷിമാറാൻ വോട്ടുനേടാൻ 

സന്ദർഭംപോൽ കാലുമാറാൻ 

ഉത്തമമിസ്സംഖ്യകൾ തൻ 

സ്വാധീനമല്ലോ.

അക്ഷഹൃദയമിന്നുപ-

ദേശിച്ചാലും ഋതുപർണ്ണാ!

ഒത്തുചേർന്നു നമുക്കിനി 

മുന്നേറിടേണ്ടു.

അതിദ്രുതമുയർന്നേറി 

സ്ഥാനമാനധനങ്ങളെ 

ലഭിക്കുവാനശ്വവേഗം 

നിനക്കു നൽകാം.

ബാഹുകൻ ഞാൻ നാളെ വീണ്ടും 

നിഷധാധിനാഥനായി 

സ്ഥാനമേൽക്കും; ദമയന്തി 

തിരിച്ചിങ്ങെത്തും.

നിഷധരാജ്യത്തിൻ   പുനർ-

വികസനപ്രവർത്തനം 

ഋതുപർണ്ണാ! നമുക്കൊത്തു 

പകുത്തിടേണം.

സംഖ്യകൾ തൻ ശക്തിയല്ലോ 

ജനകീയശക്തി നീയാ 

സംഖ്യാസൂത്രമെനിക്കായി-

ന്നുപദേശിക്കൂ.
