കൃഷ്ണപ്പരുന്ത്‌

Could there be a poet who hasn’t written poems in his or her classroom while (not) listening to lectures? Surely, there couldn't be. The poet here was in a lecture class on ‘Transmission and Distribution”. Like the engineer that he was aspiring to be, he wanted to believe that electrification was for the betterment of humanity. However, like the poet that he was, he couldn’t stop himself from pondering on the harm that it would bring upon nature and, hence, his other fellow beings.

The subject of the poem, the kite, is soaring the skies and looking for a place to perch on to give his tired wings some rest. He sees the transmission lines and towers, and in all his innocence, mistakes them as an offering of kindness by man to provide the birds a resting place. He swoops down and no sooner than he perches, is electrocuted. The lineman who comes to remove the dead bird portends that he too, like the bird, may one day fall prey to the predatory technology. The poet calls the bird a martyr to human kindness. Indeed, one wonders how kind really is the humankind.

Listen to a soul-stirring rendition of the poem by Dr. K. V. Rajagopalan.

In the poem, the poet refers to the Pykara Hydro-electric Power Station. Commissioned in 1933, this is one of the oldest power stations in South India and was declared as a heritage power plant in 1997.

അരക്കില്ലം

This poem, Arakkillam, was written in 1991. The poet reflects on the world around him and sees nothing but a recreation of Kurukshetra. Sons are at war with each other. The pillars of virtue are breaking down. The mighty are drunken on power. Truth is stripped of all its worth, and the abuse continues in all its versions. And that secret exit to safety that our forefathers had shown us - alas, we have forgotten all about it. Thirty years down the lane, we are still where we were. We are the same, if not worse. Were we ever equipped to put together for ourselves a better place? Is it really in us to turn things around? Do we even have the will?

Listen to a heartrending recital of the poem by Dr. K. V. Rajagopalan.

ഉള്ളും പുറവും (പുനരര്‍പ്പണം)

It’s the perennial question, again. So what is the truth? Or where is it? Is it within you or without?

Just as the whole expanse of the sky is reflected in a little dewdrop, or the infinity of the ocean is contained in a small drop of rain, perhaps the universe in its entirety reflects within me too? The poet asks.

Are these galaxies of stars and the zillions of beings, living and non-living, but just reflections of the essence that resides in me? Is this, then, the ultimate truth? He ponders.

Sage Agasthya had swallowed the entire water body that spans this earth in just a
single gulp. And Mother Yashoda had seen the whole world and all that it holds in Little Krishna’s mouth. So, is this, then, the real truth? The truth that fills you from within and surrounds you from without?

A poem, when rendered, conveys the subtle nuances of the poem which may go unnoticed by the reader. However, each performer adds his or her own flavour to the poem, enhancing the listener's experience of it.

I share with the readers a rendition of the poem, Ullum Puravum, by Dr. K. V. Rajagopalan.

Aryavaidyan P K Warrier, the doyen of Ayurveda, passed on to his divine abode earlier this month, leaving a void in the field of Ayurveda and healthcare. He was an elder brother, friend and guide to my father.  His passing on leaves an empty space in my father’s heart that will never be filled.

I share here Achhan’s poetic tribute to the departed soul who was a gentle healer and a great humanist. The poem rendered in the mellifluous voice of Dr. K. V. Rajagopalan, Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala, offers a prayer to the ‘kedavilakku’ – the ‘eternal lamp’ – that dwells in the ‘sivamandiram’ (Kailasamandiram) – the ‘abode of Lord Siva’.

The poem was rendered at the release function of the book “Vaidyathinte Bhoomiyum Akaashavum’, which in itself is a tribute to Dr. P. K. Warrier, by Dr. K. Muraleedharan.

The listeners may find a slight variation in the words between the rendition and the poem below. That is because Achhan has revisited and revised the poem.

കെടാവിളക്ക്
