ഉണ്ണികൃഷ്ണൻ

The poet, like many of his generation, grew up listening to the stories of ‘Krishna’. His young mind was so captivated by the divine little flautist’ that sometimes he found in Him the playmate he never had and sometimes even identified with him. Kalindi and Vrindavan were but the orchard and the river that he grew up with. Nanda was his father, Yashoda was his mother, and his sister was a cowherd girl.

‘Krishna’ stayed with the poet throughout his growing years, and the poet found Him reflected in the entire universe. Somewhere along the way, the poet grew out of his childhood reveries, but his mind still refuses to give up listening for the music that would flow like nectar from the ‘divine flute’.

Listen to a soothing rendition of the poem by Smitha Keeran Warrier.

നേരും നുണയും

A poet is a seeker – a seeker of truth. Poetry is his journey – a journey in search of truth. Poems are thoughts – the thoughts that keep him company on this journey. However, the paths of truth and myth lie so close to each other that they sometimes cross, sometimes overlap and sometimes lie so entwined that the seeker may miss one for the other.

On his journey, the poet here finds truth and myth in their varied manifestations, which are but way stations where he stops over before he continues in search of the ultimate reality. ‘Naerum Nunayum’ is such a poem, or a thought, that tries to disentangle truth and myth, to know them for what they are.

Listen to a stirring rendition of the poem by Dhanya Pappan. Dhanya works as a writer and editor. Poetry is her passion.

അരക്കില്ലം

This poem, Arakkillam, was written in 1991. The poet reflects on the world around him and sees nothing but a recreation of Kurukshetra. Sons are at war with each other. The pillars of virtue are breaking down. The mighty are drunken on power. Truth is stripped of all its worth, and the abuse continues in all its versions. And that secret exit to safety that our forefathers had shown us - alas, we have forgotten all about it. Thirty years down the lane, we are still where we were. We are the same, if not worse. Were we ever equipped to put together for ourselves a better place? Is it really in us to turn things around? Do we even have the will?

Listen to a heartrending recital of the poem by Dr. K. V. Rajagopalan.

അരക്കില്ലം

തൊരു ഖാണ്ഡവപ്രസ്ഥം;

     ഇത്തിരിച്ചാരം മാത്രം.

പണ്ടൊരു നൃപാലനു

തങ്ങുവാനീ നാടാകെ-

ഇങ്ങൊരു നിഷാദാഗ്നി-
