The
little drop of dew has been an inspiration to many a poet. The dewdrop, in
poetic musings, has often become a flawless mirror to the spiritual soul, at times an obvious manifestation of fleeting beauty, sometimes a graceful
veneer of intense sorrow, and almost always, a poignant symbol of life's fragility.
In this poem, Manjuthulli, the dewdrop becomes all of this and more to the poet. He identifies himself with the dewdrop, as he feels his own existence is equally momentary. The entire universe with its infinite skies reflects in him too. When the sun shines on him, he blooms in all seven hues. And, even in the darkest of hours, he flashes a smile, albeit for a short while. Like the ephemeral dewdrop, he too will vanish only to return and fall as a drop of tear on a poet’s cheek!
Here, the poet identifies with the dewdrop, and the reader with the poet.
The following rendition in Arundhathy Varma’s rich and resonant voice adds to the experience of the poem.
