കരയുന്ന ഉണ്ണി

In 1992, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also known as the Earth Summit, was held at Rio de Janeiro where more than 100 leaders from around the world met to address the ‘urgent’ problems of environmental protection and socio-economic development. How ‘urgent’ an environmental problem is continues to be debatable though. For, we are still debating without having found any feasible solutions whatsoever, creating more and more serious environmental issues in the meantime. The poet here ponders over the sheer futility of such summits hosted by those in power – of money and position – who turn a deaf ear and a blind eye to the continued human atrocities on the planet. All for more money and more power.

The subject of the poem ‘Karayunna Unni’, or ‘The Crying Baby’, represents our future generations – our children and grandchildren. As our glaciers melt and drain away, rivers go dry, forests turn into deserts, and air weighs down with toxicity, ‘the baby’ gasps for a breath of fresh air and thirsts for a drop of clean water. Alas, if only someone heard its pitiful cries! Unfortunately, they continue to fall on deaf ears.

PS: The picture below, which was famously captured by Pablo Bartholomew at the time of the Bhopal gas tragedy and which tore the Indian conscience to shreds at that time, was awarded the World Press Photo of the Year (1985). The tragedy, however, lives on.

കരയുന്ന ഉണ്ണി

ദീനദീനമൊരുണ്ണി കേഴുന്നു!

     വരളുന്ന ഗംഗതൻ കരയിൽ,

മരുഭൂമിയായൊരു  

     മരതകക്കാടിൻ്റെ മടിയിൽ,

അങ്ങു ഹിമാനികൾ കുത്തിയൊലിച്ചൊരു 

     മഞ്ഞുമാമലതൻ ചുവട്ടിൽ,

ഒരു തുള്ളി നീരും പൊഴിക്കാത്ത വന്ധ്യമാം 

     ധവളമേഘത്തിൻ്റെ നിഴലിൽ,

വിഷവായുവേറ്റു വിറങ്ങലിച്ചടിയുന്ന 

     പശുപക്ഷിമാനവർക്കിടയിൽ,

ഒരു വീർപ്പു കിട്ടാതെ കുടിനീരുമില്ലാതെ 

     ലവലേശമാർദ്രതയെന്യേ 

ദയനീയനാമൊരു പൊന്നുണ്ണി കരയുന്നു 

     വരളുന്ന ഗംഗതൻ കരയിൽ 

ഉഗ്രമാംവേനലിൻ നാളങ്ങൾ കത്തുന്ന 

     തപ്തമാം താഴ്വര തന്നിൽ,

കുന്നു കൂടീടും കടലാസ്സുനോട്ടിൻ്റെ

    ശൃംഗത്തിലവകളാൽ മൂടി,

അതിദീനമതിദീനമുണ്ണി കരയുന്നു 

     തളർവാതമാർന്നു, കൈകാലുകൾ മരവിച്ചു 

വിഷവാതകങ്ങളാൽ ഹൃദയവും സ്തംഭിച്ചു 

     എരിപൊരിക്കൊണ്ടു വശംകെട്ടു വാടിയാ-

ഗളനാളമാകെ വരണ്ടും വിത്തപ്രതാപത്തിൻ 

     'ഭൗമോച്ചവേദി'യിൽ ഉച്ചത്തിൽ കേഴുന്നിതുണ്ണി!
