ചെർണോബിൽ

Man’s scientific pursuits have led him to make amazing discoveries that could better his life on earth. But he always ended up using them to fulfil his own greed. This poem is based on the nuclear explosion that occurred in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant years ago. The reasons cited for the disaster were design flaws along with negligence of the operators. The destruction that ensued, including loss of human life and damage to property, was humungous and irreparable.

In this poem, Chernobyl, the poet asks Devi, the epitome of Shakti or Power – Did I misspell your mantra while invoking you? Did I mispronounce it? Where did I go wrong that you have now turned into Kaali, with a fierce, dark form that masks your grace, with fangs that hide your smile?  – And the poet regretfully recognises a reflection of his own human race in this poison-spewing, death-sowing avatar of the Goddess.

Today, decades later, Chernobyl is again afire with war cries. What unleashed the war was, again, the greed for power, or rather, the fear of losing it.

ചെർണോബിൽ 

ദുഷ്ടനാം മഹിഷത്തെ 

ഹനിക്കാൻ നിന്നെ സ്വർഗ്ഗ-

ശക്തികൾ സമാഹരി-

ച്ചാവാഹിച്ചല്ലോ മുന്നം 

വർഷിക്കും ശാകംഭരി 

രക്ഷിക്കും വരദയായ് 

ശക്തിയെയുണർത്തേണ്ട 

മന്ത്രം നീ ഞങ്ങൾക്കേകി.

വിദ്യുത്തിൻ വരദാത്രി 

ദുർഗ്ഗയായ് നിന്നെ ദ്വാദ-

ശാക്ഷരബീജങ്ങളാ-

ലിന്നു ഞാനാവാഹിക്കേ,

മൃത്യുവിൻ വിഷവർഷം 

വമിക്കും ഭയാനക-

ഭദ്രകാളിയായ് ഭാവം 

മാറ്റുവാനെന്തേ ബന്ധം?

തെറ്റായിജ്ജപിച്ചുവോ 

മൂലമന്ത്രത്തെ?ശ്ശക്തി-

ചക്രത്തിനന്തർബിന്ദു

പങ്കിലമാക്കിത്തീർത്തോ?

സുന്ദരം മുഖബിംബ-

മൊളിക്കും കരാളത 

പുഞ്ചിരി മറയ്ക്കുമ-
