നേരും നുണയും

A poet is a seeker – a seeker of truth. Poetry is his journey – a journey in search of truth. Poems are thoughts – the thoughts that keep him company on this journey. However, the paths of truth and myth lie so close to each other that they sometimes cross, sometimes overlap and sometimes lie so entwined that the seeker may miss one for the other.

On his journey, the poet here finds truth and myth in their varied manifestations, which are but way stations where he stops over before he continues in search of the ultimate reality. ‘Naerum Nunayum’ is such a poem, or a thought, that tries to disentangle truth and myth, to know them for what they are.

 നേരും നുണയും 

സത്യമാണിരുൾ; അർക്ക-

     വെളിച്ചം കറുപ്പോലും

സത്യത്തിന്നുടൽമൂടും

     തൂവെള്ള വസ്ത്രം മാത്രം.

സത്യമാണല്ലോ മൗനം 

     മിഥ്യാജല്പനങ്ങൾ തൻ 

ചിറ്റോളങ്ങളാലതി-

     ന്നാഴമാരറിയുന്നു?

സത്യമോ ശുദ്ധശൂന്യ-

     മാകാശം; ജ്യോതിർഗ്ഗോള-

ലക്ഷങ്ങളസ്സത്യത്തിൻ

     മുത്തുമാലകൾ മാത്രം.

സത്യമാണല്ലോ മൃതി;

    ജീവിതം പരമാർത്ഥ-

സത്യത്തെക്കെട്ടിപ്പൂട്ടും

    കൽത്തുറുങ്കറ മാത്രം.

സ്വപ്നവും ജാഗ്രത്തുമീ

     സത്യമാം സുഷുപ്തിക്കു

ചിത്രവർണ്ണാലംകൃത-

     ജാലവിസ്മൃതി മാത്രം.

മർത്ത്യനാണല്ലോ സത്യം;

     ഈശ്വരൻ സർഗ്ഗാത്മക-

കല്പനാവിശേഷത്തിൻ

     മായാ വിഗ്രഹമത്രേ.

അജ്ഞതയല്ലോ സത്യം;

     അറിവജ്ഞതയുടെ

വക്ത്രത്തിൻ പരിഹാസ-

    ച്ചിരിതന്നൊളി മാത്രം.
