രാഷ്ട്രപിതാക്കളെ വിൽക്കുക

It was in the early 1990s that a report on the Soviet Union’s desperate efforts to sell the entombed, embalmed body of Vladimir I. Lenin in order to raise foreign currency had created a furore. The report, which was quoted by several leading news organisations around the world, later turned out to be a hoax and perhaps a prank, a very serious one at that.

The event, however, triggered several thoughts in the poet’s mind which led to the creation of this poem, “Rashtrapithaakkale Vilkkuka”. The poem, which obviously is a satire, indirectly dwells on the poet's own country and countrymen. We are quick at capitalising on the greatness of the Founding Fathers of our Nation while not giving a straw for their visions, struggles, or sacrifices. The poet further sarcastically points to the opportunity for making some quick cash that had turned to ashes in their funeral pyres. Alas! Even these traditions are a mere waste in an already impoverished economy, he laments.

The poem has been rendered by Jayasree T., who is a teacher of Malayalam. She writes poetry under the pen name Jayasree Peringode.

രാഷ്ട്രപിതാക്കളെ വിൽക്കുക

മുപ്പതു ദശലക്ഷം 

     ഡോളറാണല്ലോ റഷ്യ 

നിശ്ചയിച്ചതു രാഷ്ട്ര-

     ശില്പി തൻ ജഡത്തിന്നു 

മൂല്യമായ് സമ്പന്നന്മാർ 

     പറന്നെത്തുന്നു റൊക്ക-

മേകുവാൻ ലിങ്കൺ വാണ 

     പുണ്യഭൂമിയിൽ നിന്നും.

ഇന്ത്യയ്‌ക്കോ ലേലം ചെയ്തു 

     വിൽക്കുവാനില്ലാ രാഷ്ട്രം

നിർമ്മിച്ച നേതാക്കൾ തൻ 

     പാഞ്ചഭൗതികോച്ഛിഷ്ടം

ചന്ദനച്ചിത കൂട്ടി 

     കൊളുത്തീലെങ്കിൽ നമു-

ക്കിന്നഹോ! ദശലക്ഷം 

     വെറുതേ കിടച്ചേനേ!

നമ്മുടെ പിതാക്കൾക്കോ,

     അക്കരെ പ്രദർശന-

മന്ദിരങ്ങളിൽ സ്ഥിര-

     പദവും ലഭിച്ചേനേ!

വന്ദ്യരാം നേതാക്കളെ-

    ക്കയറ്റുമതി  ചെയ്യാ-

നുള്ള സൗഭാഗ്യം കൂടി 

     നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടവർ നമ്മൾ!

നിശ്ചയിക്കുക വില 

     ഡോളറിൽ; വെറുതേ നാ-

മഗ്നിയിലെരിക്കുവ-

     തൊരു പാഴ്‌ചെലവത്രേ.
