പൊൻമാൻ

In this poem, Ponmaan (Golden Deer), the poet uses the context of Ramayana to point out the fickleness of human nature. Rama - who could well be you and me - is constantly chasing the golden deer of his insatiable, unattainable desires. The moment he feels the deer is within his reach, he realises it has slipped farther away like an oasis. Rama continues to run after the deer, leaving Sita, the higher purpose of his life, far behind. So far behind that she cannot escape the hands of the multi-headed monstrous society that’s constantly after sensuous pleasures.

The poet ponders on the hypocrisy of it all. He alludes to Rama’s smouldering suspicion about his wife which is hidden behind the smokescreen of his dharma. Sita, having to prove herself over and over, is burnt down by the fires of her own chastity. Rama can do little but watch helplessly as she slowly drifts away from his world. In the end, he is left with nothing but a mere gold idol that he made of her. All the while Rama revels in sorrow, he continues to chase his golden deer. His fortitude, which had broken down many a Sivakarmuka* to win his Sita, gradually falls apart within him.

പൊൻമാൻ

മുപ്പാരിനധീശ്വരൻ ഞാ-

     നിപ്പൊൻമാനിൻ പിന്നിലോടി 

എത്രനാളായിരുൾക്കാട്ടി-

     ലലഞ്ഞിടുന്നു?

തൊട്ടുതൊട്ടില്ലേവം കാനൽ-

     ജ്ജലം പോലാ സ്വർണ്ണമൃഗം 

കൈപ്പിടിയിൽപ്പെടാതോടി 

     മറഞ്ഞിടുന്നു.

അഭ്രചിത്രം പോലുൾക്കണ്ണിൽ 

     തെളിയുന്നു ഭൂമികന്യ 

ലക്ഷ്മണരേഖകൾ താണ്ടി-

     ഗ്ഗമിക്കുവതും;

ദശേന്ദ്രിയവക്ത്രങ്ങളാൽ 

     മധുമോന്തും പിപാസുവാം 

ദശാനനൻ പുഷ്പകത്തിൽ 

     കരേറ്റുവതും;

അപവാദധൂമങ്ങളാ-

     ലാവൃതമാമഗ്നികുണ്ഡം 

വിരഹവഹ്നിയായുള്ളി-

     ലെരിയുവതും;

ധർമ്മരക്ഷണത്തിലെൻ്റെ 

     ശങ്കാവിഷം പൊതിഞ്ഞു ഞാൻ 

ക്രൗഞ്ചയുഗ്മങ്ങളെയൂട്ടി 

     വിലപിപ്പതും;

കാഞ്ചനത്തിൻ പ്രേയസിയൊ-

     ത്തശ്വമേധം; മൺമറയും 

സാധ്വി; കണ്ണീർപ്പുഴതന്നി-

     ലാഴും ദുരന്തം.

പൊൻമാനിനെപ്പിന്തുടർന്നി-

     ക്കാട്ടിലിന്നുമലയുമ്പോൾ 

എന്നിൽ ശിവകാർമുകങ്ങൾ 

     തകർന്നിടുന്നു.

ലങ്കയോത്തെന്നയോധ്യയു-

     മെരിയുന്നു; കന്യാത്വത്തിൻ 

പഞ്ചാഗ്നിയിൽ സ്ത്രീത്വമാകെ-

     ത്തപിച്ചിടുന്നു.
