താമരമകൾ

This poem, Thamaramakal, is a tribute to the lotus flower, which in spite of being born in murky waters, amidst dirty weeds, rises up from extreme stench and grows up to spread fragrance and shed radiance all around her. While the little bee draws honey, the sun derives its soul spirit from her.

The poem has another layer of meaning which reaches out to the reader. We live in such times when the older generation is struggling to come to terms up with the newer generation, all the while slipping and falling back into ruminations of its own past glory. The poem presents a new take where the poet appreciates the beauty and perseverance of the new generation in spite of its growing up in the most adverse and unfavourable circumstances.

താമരമകൾ

അച്ഛനമ്മമാർതൻ കണ്ണീർ-

     ക്കയമാമച്ചളിക്കുണ്ടിൽ

പെറ്റു നീയെൻ കൊച്ചു ചെന്താ-

     മരമലരേ!

ചേറിൽനിന്നുമുയർന്നു നീ 

     കീറിപ്പാറിപ്പരന്നൊരു 

പായലിൽ തൻ തല ചാച്ചു 

    വളർന്നിടുമ്പോൾ.

മുഗ്ധമന്ദഹാസങ്ങളാ-

    ലർക്കനഭിവാദ്യമേകി,

തെക്കൻകാറ്റു താരാട്ടുമ്പോൾ 

    ചാഞ്ചാടിയാടി.

ചിറ്റോളങ്ങളിളകുന്നു 

     സരസ്സിതിൽ - സുഖങ്ങളായ്,

ദു:ഖങ്ങളായ്, ആശകളായ്,

     നൈരാശ്യങ്ങളായ്.

ജയപരാജയങ്ങളായ് - 

     അടിയിലെച്ചേറിൽനിന്നു 

വമിക്കുന്നു കഠിനമാം 

     ദുർഗ്ഗന്ധപൂരം.

എങ്കിലും നീ ചിരിക്കുന്നു;

     ചിറകടിച്ചണയുമ-

ച്ചഞ്ചരീകത്തിനു പൂന്തേൻ 

     വിളമ്പീടുന്നു.

പിച്ചവയ്ക്കും മന്ദാനില-

     ന്നസുലഭസൗരഭ്യവും 

അർക്കനാത്മതേജസ്സും നീ 

     പകർന്നിടുന്നു .

ചളിക്കുണ്ടിൽ പിറന്നതിൽ 

     വളർന്ന നീ നാളെയതി-

ലവസാനസൗരഭ്യവു-

    മർപ്പിക്കുമല്ലോ!

കൂരിരുളിൻ പുഞ്ചിരിയായ് 

    നീലവാനിലമ്പിളിയായ്,

ശ്രീകോവിലിൽ ശ്രീദേവിയായ്,

    രാവിൽ നിലാവായ് 

ചെന്താമരമകളായി-

     ന്നെൻ കരളിൽകുളിരേകും 

പൊന്നോമനമലരിനെ-

     ന്നഭിവാദ്യങ്ങൾ.
