Time (kaalam) changes, and it changes constantly. Or so you've always been told. Time races so ahead of you that you can’t catch up with it and are left far behind. Or so you often thought. Though always in a rush, Time sometimes slows down, limps and lags, only to make haste and dash off again into infinity. Or so you have, at times, felt.

But this infinity called Time  which is just a presence, if such a thing can be, with no physicality whatsoever – how would it change and how would it move? Aren’t you actually marking your own transitions as different points in Time?

The poet, here, addresses Time and implores it to pause for a while amidst its journey, which has neither a beginning nor an end, and is never anchored, nor ever moored. He asks Time where it is headed – to which destination? And he invites it to stop by and take a short respite under the pandal that he has put up for it on the wayside. The poet, as usual, has his unique perspective and his own way of approaching and expressing things.

Being the artist of words that he is, he paints vivid imagery with rich metaphors and intense emotional hues. He enticingly refers to blushing, bashful twilights that linger, waiting for Time, around the corner of the horizon. Nights languish, lovelorn, in anticipation of Time, wine in hand. So too the afternoons hang around, anxious and eager to serve from their silver bowls of milk. And he exclaims that many an empire collapses, oceans dry up, lands cave in, creatures evolve, and ideologies die and sprout again under the heavy, pounding hooves of Time.

Yet, the poet wonders, haven’t there been sages who have reined in and held Time under their control? Alas! Time itself has stood still on the Kalindi, as its waves thrilled at the mesmerising sight of the Lord and the gopis dancing in divine love. Thus, as the poet too waits under the figurative pandal, musing on love's melodies, he realises the unreality of it all. Time, himself, the pandal, and the entire scheme of things - aren't they all but figments of his own imagination!

Sudarsana Kumar’s rendition exquisitely captures the poetic imagery.

In the puranas, Bahuka was Nala in disguise. Nala lost his kingdom to his cousin in a game of dice. He abandoned his beloved wife, Damayanti, in the forest, alone and scantily clad in her half-garment. Disgraced, Nala had to hide his face, handsome as it was, behind the ugliness of Bahuka, dwarfed by his own self-deprecation. Thus Bahuka, at that point of time, was a complete loser. Or almost. Until he made his last winning move by making a diplomatic pact with King Rithuparna. Bahuka, who understood the horse’s heart inside out and could ride a horse at the speed of light, trades his skill with Rithuparna who was the master of counting and knew how to roll the dice for a sure win. Sure enough, Bahuka was finally able to shed his ugly face, stand tall, and win back his kingdom and wife.

That’s but a gist of the story, however, the poet’s intent was not to narrate the story of Nala. The poem is a political satire. The poet calls politics, or democracy rather, a game of numbers. Here, victory is always with the numbers. Switching parties and winning votes are all made easy if one has the numbers. And the deal-makers unduly cash in.

Das M.D.’s full-throated recital underscores the satire in the poem. Through Nala’s story, the poet derides the politics of the times this poem was written in. Unfortunately, politics continues in a hopeless state. Pun intended.

The context is Ramayana. King Ram has made preparations to perform Rajasuya. He will perform the yaga with a statue made of gold, of Sita, by his side. Sita, at that moment, is in Sage Valmiki’s ashram. She is lost in deep thought.

In her mind, she thanks the king, her beloved, for letting a golden statue of herself take his wife’s place at the yaga. Indeed, that’s all that’s needed, she says. The king can now let free the horses. She knows her sons, along with the Sage, will soon be at Ayodhya. As for her, she is content at the ashram – like a baby at her mother’s bosom. No, she will not be a blotch on the dynasty of the Sun. Of course, her purity remains untouched even by fire. But a king, after all, has to listen to his people. Subtly, she points to the sheer irony of it all. (To think the testimony of the Fire does not hold good for the Scion of the Sun!) She has a message for the king though. That she too carries in her heart an image of the king – not made of gold, nor precious stones, but etched with her own blood.

The reader can decipher in her ruminations an underlying bitterness, if not overt sarcasm. The reader cannot but wonder if Sita foresees that she is soon to take refuge in Mother Earth’s lap. Would she, perhaps, be even looking forward to it?

This moment, filled with pathos, is soon to be followed by the most heartrending moment in Ramayana. The events that have led to this moment leave every reader (read ‘every woman’) feeling betrayed. The idol of Ram, who up until then was your hero, at that moment falls from its pedestal, shattering your hope, faith and adulation into a million pieces. That it was the king’s dharma to lend his ears to every citizen – so what if he is a malicious, distrustful husband – gives you little solace. That he was as heartbroken as his wife, that he was leading a hermit’s life amidst royal abundances, is not enough salve to soothe the wounds of the massive letdown.

Arundhathy Varma’s rendition of the poem is powerful. And so it should be. For, Sita is a powerful woman. A woman who is morally strong, who places her self-esteem far above everything else. She wouldn’t compromise it – not for her life, not for the love of her life.

The poem connects two different points of time, the connecting link being the Kaattaalan  "the hunter"  who is also the protagonist in the poem.

In the Treta, a hunter shot his arrow and killed one of two mating birds, incurring the wrath of the Sage (Valmiki) who happened to witness the tragedy that rent his heart. The Sage’s cry, ma nishada (nay, wild hunter!), which turned out to be the very first words of the first verse of the first ever poem uttered, has been echoing in the universe ever since. And the world received an epic that interwove into its verses the ways of dharma – right living – the intricacies of which the world continues to unweave and reweave.

In the Dwapara, again, a hunter shot his arrow at what he thought was a doe, but hit Lord Krishna’s toe – that being an excuse for the Lord to leave his mortal form. Ironically, in both the contexts, the hunter was only aiming for his day’s kill to feed his dear ones. Whatever followed was unintentional. Yet, what were commonplace actions for a hunter mark the turn of the course of history in two different eras. And the hunter – the protagonist – seeks forgiveness from the seers for his actions that may have emended, albeit unknowingly, their prophecies.

This was a poem the poet held very close to his heart; so was its rendition by Smitha Keeran Warrier, his youngest daughter. He would listen to the rendition umpteen times and still not tire of it.

It was one of those last days when the poet was in the hospital. Perhaps he knew that his time had come. He wished that his poem, Vazhiyorathu (On the Wayside), be published after his passing away. In this poem, the poet says vida (farewell) to all who gave him company on the journey of his life.

He bids adieu to the wayside inns, the trees, the beaming flowers and the gurgling streams. He takes leave of the travellers who went ahead of him, who came after him, and who walked with him – some giving him laughter and some giving him tears. He says goodbye to the distant views that drizzled poetry in his barren mind.

The poet feels he has achieved it all, yet he has gained nothing save for a few tears and smiles. There’s no page for himself that he wrote in the epic of his life. There’s no invention he made nor any monument he raised that he would be remembered for.

As one reads this poem, one wonders at the quiet exit the poet had desired for himself. He perhaps wished to disappear leaving even the fallen leaves unruffled, the grassy patches uncrushed, and the tiniest pebble unturned. And so he did. Yet the landscape doesn’t remain the same. It looks empty for his absence.

Presenting here a rendition of the poem by K. A. Sudarsana Kumar.

Announcing the sad demise of Poet K. T. Krishna Variar. He had been ailing for the past few months. The poet left his mortal coil for the Divine Abode on December 3, 2022, at 7.40 p.m.

The void he left is irreparable. The loss is irreplaceable.

The poet had touched many lives with his friendly manners, charming smile, stark professionalism, engaging interactions, incredible brilliance and heart-touching poetry.

Presented below is an anecdotal and poetic tribute to the poet by Jayadev Krishnan, Editor, Uravu, Arya Vaidya Sala Kottakkal.

For a not-so-very-long poem, the poet has packed it with a lot of meaning using vivid imagery and subtle reflections. The poem narrates the story of a snake that dwells inside a “puttu” – a snake mound. It craves to break out of the darkness it’s been trapped in for its entire life. But for the mother occasionally dropping in some food, the snake is totally detached from the rest of the universe. And it longs to crawl up the walls of its dungeon and peep into the big, wide world.

Alas, one day, it does just that. It climbs up the mound and catches but a glimpse of the sky only to be mesmerised by the glory of the sun. To be enthralled by the splendorous views of the vast horizon. And it chooses never to slither back into its hole. Not for all the milk and honey that its mother may feed it.

Every reader of poetry is a poet in himself or herself. And a reader of this poem cannot but grasp the full import of the poem. The snake here is your own self. The snake mound is your own body born of the basic elements. The sky is the universe at large, or the infinite oneness. The mother that feeds you is Mother Nature. The milk and honey you feed on are the sensuous pleasures of the material world. Once you break away from this mundane existence and leave the material pleasures, you get to drink the elixir for the soul, to experience the light of the monistic oneness. And then there’s no return to elemental existence.

The snake also refers to kundalini, one's latent energy that's believed to lie coiled at the base of one's spine. When this energy rises, through yoga, all the way up to the brain where resides the sahasrara padma - the thousand-petalled lotus that symbolises supreme consciousness – it's called kundalini awakening, or self-realization.

Here's for you a poignant rendition of the poem by Smitha Keeran Warrier.
