പട്ടുനൂൽപ്പുഴു

The joy of the entire spring reflects in the smile of a tiny wallflower. The first little raindrop brings with it the freshness of the monsoon. A wisp of a cloud blushing all of the reddish hues of the dawn heralds the beauty of the rising sun. So it’s not surprising that the poet, during his philosophical reflections, seeks the ultimate truth – of the entire universe and his own being – in a worm – in a wee little worm that hides in a silken cocoon that it has woven around itself.

In this poem, “Pattunoolpuzhu” (Silkworm), the poet identifies with the silkworm. Dwelling in contemplation, like the silkworm in its cocoon, the poet weaves his songs, like silken yarns in vivid hues.  Eventually, when the spirit within would cease fluttering, the poet muses, “I” would become one with “my” cocoon, the soul would then turn into a star on the farthest corner of the horizon, or a white orchid flower on the highest peak of the Sahyadri, or the fragrant breath of an intoxicating night queen. “I” would view the charming twilights, the days and the nights, the seasons, and the passing eras. “I” would watch the gardens in bloom and the flush of asoka*. And “I” would revel in the beauty of them all draped in “my” silken yarns.

Listen to Sreedevi Unni render the poem in her silky timbre.

*asoka flowers, asoka also means ‘without sorrow’.

'ബെർമുഡാ ത്രികോണം'

The Bermuda Triangle is a mythical section in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean, which has no specific boundaries, where dozens of ships and airplanes are believed to have vanished. As for an explanation for the disappearances, the imaginatively romantic believe that mysterious forces suck the vessels into the depths of the ocean causing them to disappear forever, and the logically pragmatic point to natural phenomena that can render the ocean treacherous for navigation. As for evidence to support the explanations, well, there aren’t too many.

In this poem, Bermuda Thrikonam, one sees that the fabled Triangle has caught the imagination of the poet too in his own unique, reflective, philosophical way. Man embarks on the journey of his life, crossing the ocean of time, leaving the very roots of his essential being, in search of the paradisiacal abode of his dreams. Though swirling, sinking and drowning in the eddy of his own desires, he continues to yearn for the imagined greener pastures on the far-away shores. Caught in the whirlpool of his aspirations and greed, he seeks, in vain, the gates to his heaven. Was it, after all, a mirage? Where is the promised land of his dreams?

Listen to an insightful, narrative rendition of the poem by M. S. Ajayan.

പൊൻമാൻ

In this poem, Ponmaan (Golden Deer), the poet uses the context of Ramayana to point out the fickleness of human nature. Rama - who could well be you and me - is constantly chasing the golden deer of his insatiable, unattainable desires. The moment he feels the deer is within his reach, he realises it has slipped farther away like an oasis. Rama continues to run after the deer, leaving Sita, the higher purpose of his life, far behind. So far behind that she cannot escape the hands of the multi-headed monstrous society that’s constantly after sensuous pleasures.

The poet ponders on the hypocrisy of it all. He alludes to Rama’s smouldering suspicion about his wife which is hidden behind the smokescreen of his dharma. Sita, having to prove herself over and over, is burnt down by the fires of her own chastity. Rama can do little but watch helplessly as she slowly drifts away from his world. In the end, he is left with nothing but a mere gold idol that he made of her. All the while Rama revels in sorrow, he continues to chase his golden deer. His fortitude, which had broken down many a Sivakarmuka* to win his Sita, gradually falls apart within him.

മുതലാളി

‘Muthalali’ is a biographical poem in that it reflects the life of certain people the poet has come across in his life. The protagonist is a combination of those people who left the villages they grew up in, chasing their dreams and aspirations, to build their fortunes in the cities. It is also about those who never left their hometown, but while remaining on their own native land, realised it was no more the place that it used to be.

The poem brings out the pure simplicities of a rustic life and its modesties as against the corrupt complexities of urban life and its excesses. The protagonist recalls the joy of eating gruel out of his mother’s hand and reminisces the coy demeanour of his first ever love. He wonders, with a rueful sigh, how much he has changed since those days and so too his village. He regretfully accepts that some changes cannot be reversed. And he loses hope that the sandy barrens of his life will ever turn green again.

Perhaps this poem will find an echo in the mind of every one of its readers. As for me, I am hooked on these four lines - “Where have gone the grassy patches / I passed by in this desert of mine / where are the shoots of poetry / that erewhile sprouted in my mind?). They run in a continuous loop inside my head.

Das M. D.’s rendition carries the soul and conveys the very essence of the poem.

ചെർണോബിൽ

Man’s scientific pursuits have led him to make amazing discoveries that could better his life on earth. But he always ended up using them to fulfil his own greed. This poem is based on the nuclear explosion that occurred in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant years ago. The reasons cited for the disaster were design flaws along with negligence of the operators. The destruction that ensued, including loss of human life and damage to property, was humungous and irreparable.

In this poem, Chernobyl, the poet asks Devi, the epitome of Shakti or Power – Did I misspell your mantra while invoking you? Did I mispronounce it? Where did I go wrong that you have now turned into Kaali, with a fierce, dark form that masks your grace, with fangs that hide your smile?  – And the poet regretfully recognises a reflection of his own human race in this poison-spewing, death-sowing avatar of the Goddess.

Today, decades later, Chernobyl is again afire with war cries. What unleashed the war was, again, the greed for power, or rather, the fear of losing it.

Here's a powerful rendition of the poem by Smitha Keeran Warrier.

കരയുന്ന ഉണ്ണി

 PC: Pablo Bartholomew

In 1992, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also known as the Earth Summit, was held at Rio de Janeiro where more than 100 leaders from around the world met to address the ‘urgent’ problems of environmental protection and socio-economic development. How ‘urgent’ an environmental problem is continues to be debatable though. For, we are still debating without having found any feasible solutions whatsoever, creating more and more serious environmental issues in the meantime. The poet here ponders over the sheer futility of such summits hosted by those in power – of money and position – who turn a deaf ear and a blind eye to the continued human atrocities on the planet. All for more money and more power.

The subject of the poem ‘Karayunna Unni’, or ‘The Crying Baby’, represents our future generations – our children and grandchildren. As our glaciers melt and drain away, rivers go dry, forests turn into deserts, and air weighs down with toxicity, ‘the baby’ gasps for a breath of fresh air and thirsts for a drop of clean water. Alas, if only someone heard its pitiful cries! Unfortunately, they continue to fall on deaf ears.

PS: The picture below, which was famously captured by Pablo Bartholomew at the time of the Bhopal gas tragedy and which tore the Indian conscience to shreds at that time, was awarded the World Press Photo of the Year (1985). The tragedy, however, lives on.

Please listen to a heart-rending recital of the poem by Arundhathy Varma.

നാരായണീയം

This poem, ‘Narayaneeyam’, is an ode to Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri, the author of the original Sanskrit hymn, ‘Narayaneeyam’, which weaves verses praising Lord Vishnu in all His incarnations. The poet explores the layers of experiences of Melpathur as the latter sees the Lord in all His forms while he creates verbal pictures of the spectacle, and the Lord’s actions in each one of his manifestations have a direct impact on Melpathur’s life.

Melpathur feels his bondages to this material world falling away when Li’l Krishna loosens the uri (rope hanger) to steal yogurt. When the Lord, in the form of Narasimha, kills Hiranyakashipu, Melpathur knows that it’s in fact his own ego that’s destroyed. It is Melpathur who, as Prahlad, calms down the anger of the Lion-Man avatar, and it’s also him, as Arjuna, who surrenders in front of the ultimate reality expounded by the Lord himself. As Mother Yashoda, he sees the entire universe in her Son’s little mouth. And it’s Melpathur who dances unabashedly as Radha and the gopikas in utter fulfilment of their love for the Lord. When the Lord wears the thousand heads of the Kaliya, as anklets, around his dancing feet, Melpathur finds his own serpentine passions entangled with them.

Listen to RamprasadMenon’s prayerful rendition of the poem.
